Goodbye Goddard, as we knew it

The trustees at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, have voted to kill the residential undergraduate program.

The reason: no money.

Bummer.

I joined the Goddard staff in December, 1968, when I burned out in daily journalism. I had previously been with the Newport Daily Express, Northeast Observer (my weekly), the Valley News, UPI, and the Rutland Herald.

President Tim Pitkin hired me as the college's information officer from my political reporting job with the Vermont Press Bureau. I stayed on to teach journalism and creative photography, and also to get a BA degree and walk away from an MA degree.

I loved the Goddard of those 1968-72 days and had a life there that I had missed by joining the army at 17, some 15 years back in time.

Nothing lasts forever but I do cherish those wild and wacky Goddard days of Bread & Puppet Theatre, Vietnam teach-ins and protests, social and political activism, egalitarianism, and a lot of creativity and love that balanced out some of the weirdness.
