Off the beaten path to the Tamarack Gallery in East Craftsbury, VermontThe Silver Fox and I checked out the work of four photographers during a Saturday afternoon vernisage in a converted horse barn down in Vermont.
Summing it up: an excellent, if slightly musty smelling, adventure.
The four photographers: Michael Flomen, John Miller, Michael Gray, and Didi Brush. All different, all accomplished.
Flomen, who is based in Vermont but floats between NYC and Montreal, presented high-contrast images -- large and small -- of light and form. Some of the light was produced by fireflies. Prices were in the four-figure range. Not my thing but he sells in big-city galleries and has great reviews.
John Miller of Coventry, Vermont, has published two first-rate books: Deer Camp and Granite and Cedar. His nature work is fine.
Vermonter Michael Gray's straightforward quartet of hardscrabble country-living images struck a responsive chord with us.
Best of Show: Didi Brush's sensitive image of a train crossing a stone bridge in the Alps. Ms. Brush has lived in Montpellier, Vermont, for the past twenty years.
It's pretty arrogant to award a Best of Show tag. Sorry about that. But that photograph -- for me -- packs a punch I won't soon forget.
The Tamarack Gallery is barnish, woody, spacey, and charming. The horse stalls and corner hay feeders remain in place -- photographs are hung in the stalls. A pianist held forth in a corner, wine and punch and goodies were offered. Very laid back and very welcoming, although after being shut up for the winter it could stand a good airing-out.
The Tamarack is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and by appointment. 802.525.3041 - 802.586.8078.
