Log Cabin Chronicles

Second poem in a series

DOUG McKENNY

Fevered heroes
And pockmarked villains
Invade the innocence
We've enjoyed since birth

Taking and famishing
Crumbling and twisting
The songs we were taught
And the stories we read

Red is white
And white is black
The old lessons
Don't matter anymore

You've painted yourself into a comer
But the paint won't dry
And if you try to get away
Your new sneakers get wrecked

Look for another comer
But how do you get there
With painty sneakers
And villains

There used to be options
And there used to be god
