American Farce

This week, the House of Representatives, led by the Republicans, engaged in farce.

They introduced and voted on a bill to raise the debt ceiling. All Republicans voted against their bill.

They claim that this shows that they are serious about lowering the amount of spending and the debt that is owed by the United States. The lack of seriousness on the part of the Republicans is indicated in the two press releases issued by the National Republican Congressional Committee after the vote:

  • Democrats who voted against the Republican bill -- that is, with the Republicans -- were smeared as cowardly hypocrites

  • Democrats who voted for the Republican bill to increase the debt limit were labeled "brazen kings of debt" who want to "make the problem worse."
What is wrong with a little farce? Everyone gets to laugh, right?

Wrong!

The Republicans, and everyone else, recognize that the United States is living on borrowed money and we need to do something to fix the problem. In the meantime, our leadership, at least the Republican part of it, is telling the people we borrowed from that we may not pay them back.

That is not farce -- that is stupid.
