The Republicans in the US Senate killed loans for the American car companies for the immediate future. Mitch McConnell, the GOP minority leader said the following:
"The Administration negotiated in good faith with the Democratic Majority a proposal that was simply unacceptable to the vast majority of our side because we thought it, frankly, wouldn't work.
The sticking point that we are left with is the question of whether the UAW is willing to agree to a parity pay structure with other manufacturers in this country by a date certain. And I understand their reluctance to do that.
It is upon that issue that we've reached an impasse for the moment."
Let me see if I have this right...
The Senate Republicans want guys on the assembly line making less than $60,000 per year to agree to wage cuts before the government will loan the companies they work for some $14 billion.
They did not have any problem with $700 billion to bail out banks, which according to the UK Guardian:
"Financial workers at Wall Street's top banks are to receive pay deals worth more than $70 billion, a substantial proportion of which is expected to be paid in discretionary bonuses, for their work so far this year..."
Does anyone else have a problem with Mitch McConnell's logic? |
