ON HER WAY TO A STONING IN IRAQ

Not another young Western life wasted, not another young Western body maimed

I watched a video on an Iraqi website on Sunday morning, April 29, 2007. It was a male crowd event and it was made with a cellphone camera.

The language was Arabic or Kurdish. I couldn't understand it but the voices were incessant and loud.

I heard the word "Allah!" over and over again, so it was clear they were invoking the name they give the all-merciful, all-loving God.

I understood the whistles and cheers, the sound of clapping, the pointing of fingers, the pumping of hands and fists. The men were high-spirited, passionate.

In their midst was a teen-aged Yazidi girl who had fallen in love with a Muslim Kurd and converted to Islam.

The males from her community - Yazidi's follow the teachings of a combined Islam-Zoroastrianism - had pulled off her clothing and were kicking her to death while she writhed and cried for mercy.

Others were counting coup with rocks the size of cement blocks.

Cheering and hooting, the men of her village finished her off by smashing in her head with a large rock.

Praise Allah, blessed be his name, our honor is preserved!

How can we ever hope to connect with these people? It's as if we are on an alien planetů

Bring our young men and women home - no more lives wasted, no more bad investments.

Oh, wait - I almost forgot about the oil.
