Weekly Stanstead Journal editor moves to Quebec's daily Sherbrooke Record

STANSTEAD, QC | Patrick Lavery, former editor of the Stanstead Journal, has joined the reporting team at the daily Sherbrooke Record.

He was the fourth editor at the 160-year-old community newspaper in the past two years.

"I cannot blame him to have a daily in his resumé," said Journal Proprietor Jean Yves Durocher.

Durocher added that interviews for a new Journal reporter are underway.

Lavery had been on the job for eight months. He was the fourth editor since July, 2003, when Durocher bought the Journal from Ross Murray.

Murray's contract was terminated the following October by Durocher after Murray declined to function as both publisher and editor. He wanted to work only in the newsroom.

Murray, who now writes a weekly column for the Record that is also posted in the Log Cabin Chronicles, was succeeded by reporter Jen Young, who left to report for the Record in Lennoxville.

She was replaced by Peter Varga, who was soon replaced by Lavery. Both Lavery and Varga had professional training in journalism at Concordia University. Varga is now freelancing.

The Stanstead Journal has been published continuously since 1845. In its first century it had but two editors.
