On August 20, Jane and I, and my cousins Judy and Art Greaves, departed Fool's Hollow for two weeks in the Maritimes. These daily reports are the way things looked to me at the time.

From the basilica to the brew house

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI | Gahan's Pub serves lovely beer brewed down in their cellar. A sweaty 20-ounce glass of Harvest Gold is just right for washing down a thin-crust pizza slathered with basil pesto.

The Gahan House -- Trent Hayes, Brewmaster -- is in a former convent behind St. Dunstan's Basilica and across the street from The Olde Dublin Pub, the Claddagh Room, and Off Broadway. I tried them all and I'm in love.

You can visit this quartet of good eating and drinking on Sydney Street at Queen, and bring your wallet.

While at Gahan's pub, ask for a tour of the brewery in the cellar. It's compact and the stainless steel and copper brewing gear is made in PEI for the world market. Brew guy Colin Foster -- he's the filtration man and brewmaster apprentice -- gave Art and I the short tour and a briefing in making beer. Very interesting to see where the beer you just had with lunch comes from.

We're heading for the ferry to Nova Scotia shortly. Got to run -- Lily from Newcastle, Australia, was whipping up some muffins yesterday for this morning's breakfast and they smelled wonderful. I'm assuming LIly will be here, what with her boyfriend Cameron sliding in last night from Halifax, champagne in hand...
