JOHN MAHONEY

This journey is happening because my lovely cousin Kathy from London popped in unannounced last August during our fortieth wedding anniversary party.

Kathy didn't come alone. She brought her daughter Kelley, two granddaughters -- Holly and Taylor, and June, her lifelong friend and our cousin by marriage. I damn near had a heart attack when I saw her standing at the foot of the stairs by the porch, beaming. It had been more than twenty years...

The pressure was on to attend her birthday party on September 9, 2000 in London. The birthday bash has a title: "Sixty Years of Bad Hair Days." Hornchurch, her village, will rock...

It took months before Jane, who is terrified of flying, would even look at a passport application. We called my cousin Judy in Massachusetts. Hey, want to go to England and Ireland next year? They were game.

The planning began.
