Pants on fire

At this writing Tony Blair, England's Prime Minister, is facing the possibility of censure in the British Parliament. Cabinet-level Parliamentarians are leveling some withering accusations against Mr. Blair for playing fast and loose with the truth regarding reasons for attacking Iraq.

In part, they accuse him and his minions of manipulating intelligence to support a decision that was already made.

While Blair is having his feet toasted over a fire of his own making, our President is fund-raising for 2004 and coming away with bags of money. Neither the media nor the Democratic Party have the grit to call Bush on the pack of lies he served up to justify the war in Iraq.

I know that we're all atwitter about the ouster of the poisonous troll who ruled Iraq but what about the obligation of our government to be honest with us?

This premeditated lying is tantamount to framing an innocent man, executing him, then justifying your actions when you discover hitherto unknown crimes. That's not the way it's supposed to work.

What fresh hell will the next trumped up administration fantasy produce?

Our government spent millions of dollars and a ludicrous amount of energy trying to pin something on Bill Clinton over his Whitewater real estate investments, then "Travelgate," finally impeaching him over his mid-life canoodling with the chubby chick.

Bush, on the other hand, has blatantly lied to Congress and the electorate and his poll ratings are still on par with Saint Francis of Assisi.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has said the choice of Weapons of Mass Destruction justification had "a lot to do with the U.S. government bureaucracy, we settled on the one issue that everyone could agree on."

And Hitler chose "maltreatment of German Nationals" as his justification for the invasion of Czechoslovakia. In that case as well there was a British Prime Minister who swallowed the despot's reasons for war and was vilified at home.

So why are the Democrats just sitting around the campfire, toasting marshmallows and singing "Kumbaya" while Bush and his cabal of neocon idealogues make plans to colonize the Mid-East?

I can only assume it is because they are terrified. They are scared that by opposing the Bush steamroller they will lose even more of their dwindling power. Simple minded, wrong-headed thinking, to be sure.

"If the boxer you are fighting is beating the crap out of you round after round then change your game plan. Don't sag against the ropes, hoping the judges will give you points because they feel sorry for you."

The only man showing any guts among the current crop of Democratic presidential nominees is Howard Dean.

Dean is calling for an inquiry into the WMD intelligence that was the reason for invading Iraq and costing the lives of our soldiers. Unfortunately, Moe Howard has a better chance of being elected President. National recognition just isn't high enough for him to make a serious bid and the mainstream media's sycophantic worshipping of the Bush administration isn't helping either.

We have a President that didn't win the popular vote, has run the deficit through the roof, has presided over massive unemployment, is packing the courts with right wing zealots that would make Torquemada wince, and lied us into a war that promises to turn into a quagmire of death and global anti-American hatred before it is over.

And his polls couldn't be higher. What does it take to get through to you people?

Maybe the Democrats should send Monica over to the oval office in a new blue dress with a nice box of cigars for the President.
